6 years in Canada

February 26, 2004…

That’s the date when I came to Canada. I was 24 years old, young, full of passion, but really had no idea how the life would be completely different from where I came from.

What I think I have gained so far.

  • Experience. Experience. Experience.
  • Ability to speak English
  • New friends
  • Confidence
  • Courage
  • New perspective about life
  • Feeling of achievement by starting from nothing
  • Freedom

What I have lost so far.

  • Possibility of seeing my family and best friends anytime I want
  • Money (yes, I spent so much money to come here and living the first few years)
  • Given and promised success (what I have achieved there)
  • Sense of belonging (not sure if your true home is Korea or Canada)

There were only few times when I wished I had never come to canada. So far, I am still excited and happy that I’m here, living my own life and achieving something completely on my own.

It’s kinda crazy realizing 6 years are almost 20% of my life. I don’t know how long I will live in Canada. It could be couple more years or forever. But I am sure I love this country and really appreciate that I have been accepted by the country and the people, emotionally and culturally.

Of course, the best thing ever I gained after I came to Canada is my best friends. Here are my lovely friends who came to my party to celebrate the 6 years.
